Motorcycle companies have evolved over time. The technology they used to build motorcycles have now become obsolete. However, the technology and strategies used by first motorcycle companies were the first stepping stones on which the vehicles have evolved. Hildebrand & Wolfmuller

Daimler Reitwagen was the first petroleum-fueled, internal combustion motorcycle. Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach, the german investors, designed and build the motorcycles in Bad Cannstatt, Germany in 1885. However officially, Hildebrand & Wolfmuller was the first motorcycle company to start in 1894. Wilhelm Hildebrand and also Heinrich were steam-engine engineers who collaborated with Alois Wolfmuller for producing internal combustion motorcycles. Approximately, manufacturers built around two thousand of such kind of motorcycles.

The first motorcycle company kept its initial prices high and had fierce competition to improve designs. This model had no clutch nor pedals, and it was entirely a simple run and jump model. The company did not have significant commercial success. In 1919 The factory of Hildebrand and  Wolfmuller got shut down after the First World War. Moreover, people can find these motorcycles in a science museum, London, the henry ford museum, Michigan, Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum in Birmingham, Alabama, USA,  Deutsches Zweirad- und NSU-Museum in Neckarsulm, Germany, and Lalu Lintas museum in Surabaya, Indonesia.

Excelsior Motor

Excelsior Motor was a bicycle manufacturing company named Bayliss in Coventry, England originally. It later started making motorcycles. This company started the production of their first motorcycles in 1896. They were the first manufacturers of motorcycles in Britain.

Manufacturers registered the excelsior motor company as they moved to Birmingham. Manufacturers made the motorcycles from the range of 98 to 1000cc. They mostly powered it by 850cc condor engine, Blackburne and Villiers. The new company focused more on racing and competitions. It achieved 1st racing success in 1929.

 Peugeot Motorcycles is another one of the first motorcycle companies that came into existence in 1898. It still manufactures some scooter. It has now become the subsidiary of the Indian manufacturer company Mahindra. Mahindra owns 51% of Peugeot Motorcycles. Moreover, it was the first company to have a De Dion-Bouton engine attached to the wheel. Peugeot used the swiss made engine, the Zürcher and Lüthi (ZL) to produce motorcycles. In 1914 Peugeot 500cc and 500mm were also the first models to have dual overhead camshaft. Later Peugeot took over auto moto which use to be a pioneer in the motorcycle world.

Royal Enfield

Royal Enfield is also amongst the first motorcycle companies in the world. It got established in 1901.  The Enfield cycle company limited use to sell stationary engines, lawnmowers, bicycles, and motorcycles under the brand name Royal Enfield.  The Enfield cycle company also designed and produced the royal Enfield bullet. Manufacturers imported the parts and components of the 350cc Royal Enfield bullet from England and assembled in madras. Bullet variant of the Royal Enfield is still in production.it is the most lived designs from history. Royal Enfield is one such company which was in continuous production from its establishment. It has the now become one of the oldest motorcycle brands of the world.
